Aluminum vs. Steel Skid Plates – Which is Best for Your Off-Road Build?
If you’re building out your off-road vehicle—whether it's a Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, Jeep, Bronco, or Subaru—skid plates are a must-have for protecting vital components. At SWAT Customs, with locations in Fremont and Galt, CA, we install high-quality skid plates to protect your undercarriage from rocks, debris, and trail hazards. But one of the biggest decisions we help customers make is: Steel or aluminum?
Below, we break down the differences, pros, and cons of steel and aluminum skid plates so you can choose what’s right for your off-road setup.
Why You Need Skid Plates
When you’re crawling over rocks or bombing down fire roads, your vehicle’s underbody is at serious risk. Skid plates protect vital components like:
- Engine & oil pan
- Transmission
- Transfer case
- Gas tank
- Lower control arms
- Radiator and steering components
No matter what kind of rig you drive, skid plates are essential armor for serious trail use.
Steel Skid Plates – Pros & Cons
Steel skid plates are the traditional go-to option and are known for extreme durability and maximum protection.
✅ Pros:
- Stronger under impact – Less likely to dent or deform when slamming against rocks or stumps
- Less expensive – Generally cheaper to manufacture, so you save upfront
- Better for hardcore rock crawling – Ideal if you wheel in very rugged terrain frequently
❌ Cons:
- Heavy – Steel is significantly heavier, which can reduce fuel economy and affect suspension performance
- Prone to rust – Steel requires regular maintenance or powder coating to prevent corrosion
- More difficult to install solo – The added weight can make installation harder without help
Aluminum Skid Plates – Pros & Cons
Aluminum skid plates have become increasingly popular for overlanders and weekend warriors who want protection without the weight.
✅ Pros:
- Lightweight – Helps preserve fuel economy, ride quality, and suspension geometry
- Rust-resistant – No coating needed, making them low maintenance
- Great for moderate trails and daily drivers – Perfect for those who hit the trails occasionally but still need protection
❌ Cons:
- More expensive – Higher material and manufacturing costs
- Not as impact-resistant as steel – Can dent or gouge more easily if you hit something hard
- Limited availability in some fitments – Fewer manufacturers make aluminum versions for every vehicle
Which Should You Choose?
It depends on how and where you drive:
- Choose steel if you’re rock crawling, hitting serious technical trails, or want maximum protection at the lowest cost.
- Choose aluminum if you’re looking for lightweight protection, do mostly overlanding or forest service roads, or care about weight savings and rust resistance.

Note:
If you’re running heavier steel skid plates, you may want to consider upgraded suspension to handle the added weight. Ask us about pairing your skid plate install with appropriate shocks, struts, and springs that can handle the additional weight. Adding too much weight to soft springs can cause bottoming out and a large reduction in performance and ground clearance. We will advise you correctly and make sure we meet your needs and budget.
